BASKETBALL – HOW THE PLAY IS STARTED, RESTARTED AFTER SCORING AND HOW TO SCORE. Starting the game: The Jump ball: The referee to be controls the game in every respect. The game is started by the referee through a Jump ball. The referee throws the ball up amongst the players of the competing teams in the center circle. Two players, one from each team jumps to bounce the ball to one of their own colleagues. This is known as Jump ball. The other members of the team will be occupying vantage positions outside the circle till such time the ball is touched by one of the jumpers. The same method is repeated to restart the match after the half time interval.
How to restart after the ball
goes out of bounds: If the ball rolls over the boundary
lines and touches the ground or some other object, it is declared dead.
The team whose player last bounced it shall lose possession of the ball.
One member from the opposing team will throw the ball, from the sideline
nearest to the point where the ball became dead. The Three Seconds Rule: According to this rule, no player
from the team, which is in possession of the ball, shall remain in the
restricted area of the competitor’s basket for longer than 3 seconds.
This obviates tall forwards lurking in the opponent’s area near the
basket and when the ball is passed on to them, score easily. The Thirty Seconds Rule: According to this rule, the team in
possession of the ball should aim a shot at the basket within 30 seconds
of getting possession of the ball. This make the play continuing without
any hindrance. v Also, you are not permitted to knock the ball out of the basket. v
You are, likewise, not allowed to fend off a shot that is
on its incoming slope to the basket. Scoring: If you shoot into your competing
teams basket, you are likely to get 1 or 2 or 3 points depending upon
the position from where you shot. The ball should enter the net and pass
through the net from above. v
A free throw taken from just behind the line in the small
circle before the basket can get you one point.
v
A goal arising out of a throw from the large semi-circle
underneath the basket – it is called ‘field goal area’ – results
in your getting two points.
v
If you shoot the ball well behind the large semi-circle
you get three points.
