BASKETBALL - SCIENCE – SPONTANEOUS DECISIONS
As is in everything in life, success depends on the players who have the ability to think spontaneously, scientifically and very fast depending on the emerging situation on the court. A player is blocked from advancing with the ball by the opponent who is standing like a rock in the front. Let us look into this situation:
Player A1 who has got the ball can pass on to A3 but he will not be sure whether A3 will get the ball safely or B2 will intercept it. On the other flank no teammate is available. The only option for him is to send the ball between the widespread legs of B1 and make available safely to his teammate A2 just behind B1 to proceed and shoot into the basket. He faces:
If A1 bounces the ball a little before and with a great speed, it is possible that the ball will bounce up and B1 will get it (Figure 1). If A1 has to shoot between the legs of B1, at what speed and where should he bounce the ball? Here what is needed is surprise. Surprise B1 by bouncing the ball just in between his legs at a fairly fast clip. Even before B1’s hands come down, the ball would have been in the hands of A2 because of the element of surprise introduced. Ø In basketball, it is not just running that is going to help. As soon as the ball is passed on to a running teammate, he has to stop to get the ball, as it is not allowed in this game to run when you got hold of the ball. |
