BASKETBALL – SCIENTIFIC SKILLS Successful shot: To be successful, a shot should be a combination of the following constituents:
Suppose Player A is 6 foot tall but Player B is 7 foot. Let us see at what height they release the ball from a shooting distance of say 15 feet. For A is a 6 footer – if he jumps 2 feet and shoots – his arm over his head extends up to 1½ feet – the point of release of the ball will be 2 ft + 6 ft + 1½ ft = 9½ ft.
For B is 7 feet tall – if he jumps 2.25 feet and shoots – his arm over his head extends up to 1.75 feet – the point of release of the ball will be 7 ft + 2.25 ft + 1.75 ft = 11 ft.
A shot, which has a good high slope, is bound to find the target. Players should be trained to release the ball high i.e., jumping from the floor and when they reach the height of the jump, release the ball from the extended hand above the head. This scientific training will increase the shooting success greatly. |
